Harriet Boyd Hawes’s dig house, overlooking scenic Mirabello Bay on the north coast of Crete, was located just a quarter-mile away from the mid-second-millennium B.C. Minoan town of Gournia, which she uncovered in just three excavation seasons between 1901 and 1904.
