Excavations at Hattusa have turned up beautifully crafted ritual objects, such as the 7-inch-high, 13th-century B.C. silver rhyton, cast in the shape of a stag. Mysteriously, the Hittite royalty and elites abandoned Hattusa in the early 12th century B.C.; the city was then attacked, burned and destroyed for good.
