Excavations at Hattusa have turned up beautifully crafted ritual objects, such as the 1.5-inch-high, 15th-century B.C. gold pendant, which represents a Hittite god. Mysteriously, the Hittite royalty and elites abandoned Hattusa in the early 12th century B.C.; the city was then attacked, burned and destroyed for good.
