As pilgrims circumambulate the temple, gradually rising up toward the three open circular terraces and the great surmounting stupa, they become completely immersed in the temple’s high, walled galleries, which are carved with worldly images depicting the Buddha’s life, events from the history of Buddhism, and Buddhist songs and stories.
