Early Indian sculpture was deeply influenced by the naturalistic carvings of ancient Greece, as demonstrated by the third-century B.C. carved lions from Sarnath, southeast of New Delhi. (This image of four lions standing back-to-back has become a symbol of India itself and appears on a rupee coin.)
