Skellig Michael, looking northwest. The main monastery, dating as early as the sixth century A.D., stands on the lower, northern peak, 600 feet above the sea. In the ninth century, a lone monk constructed a hermitage atop the 700-foot southern peak. During bad storms, waves reach the lighthouse, left of center, 50 feet above the sea.
