The most poignant of these ancient Roman artifacts are the inscribed epitaphs that convey the pain of grieving parents. The one shown reads, “To the spirits of the underworld/ Passerius Agathopus and Acie, parents,/ (Dedicated this) to their sweetest son,/ Quintus Passerius Agathopus,/ Who lived 7 years, 11 months, 22 days.”
