A luminous portrait of King Tutankhamun and his queen, Ankhesenpaaten, illustrates the seat back of this throne discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter in Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. The royal couple is shown basking in the light of the solar disk, the single creator-god Aten, whose cult was championed by Ankhesenpaaten’s father Akhenaten (“Akhenaten” means “He who acts for Aten”).
