Traditionally, Tikal’s kings were buried on the North Acropolis, which also supported ritual buildings (and was the site of Tikal’s earliest settlement, around 800 B.C.). The standing stones are stelae erected by kings and inscribed with text dating the kings’ reigns, recording their lineage and listing their conquests.
