Part of the long facade wall on the southern border of Herod’s sunken garden. The wall contained 24 niches, four of which can be seen in the illustration. Statues were probably placed in the niches. The wall and niches were made of Roman concrete (see text). The excavation below floor level, in the lower left hand part of the picture, revealed part of the irrigation channel system that watered the sunken garden.
