The single meter stick marks the furthest extension of the altar according to Yadin’s reconstruction pictured above. This is inaccurate, says Rainey. Even if the altar were only 3 meters square, the altar would extend to the point where the two meter sticks cross, according to Rainey, thus making it very difficult to pass between the altar and the oven (or tannur) in the corner of the room.
