John the Baptist: Placed against its silver background, the expressive face of John the Baptist contrasts sharply with the expressionless Christ. The brows, the very deepset eyes, the disheveled flowing hair were used by the artist to portray John as the tragic prophet. This medallion is located on the left hand spandrel of the triumphal arch above the apse. The Virgin occupies the same position on the right, both flanking the Lamb of God.
