The splendid seal of Shema is a famous example of eighth century paleo-Hebrew script. Discovered at Megiddo in 1904, the seal bears a roaring lion, above which is incised the owner’s name, “[belonging] to Shema” and below, his title “Servant of Jeroboam.” The seal pictured is a bronze casting of the original which was lost en route to the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul.
