Spirit Pond rune stone: One of three rune stones found in 1971 at Spirit Pond in Maine, this drawing on the back of one of them ostensibly depicts the ancient coastline of Maine. However, the map is based upon the modern U.S. Geological Survey map of the area rather than upon Champlain’s map of the shoreline as it appeared centuries earlier when the rune was supposed to have been written.
