A menorah carved in relief decorates a wall of one of the burial catacombs at Beth Shearim. Between the second and fourth centuries A.D. Beth Shearim was a center of Jewish learning and the site of a necropolis to which pious Jews, who were no longer permitted burial in Jerusalem, yearned to have their last remains brought.
