Judean city wall and a Canaanite building at a later stage of excavation on the western edge of the mound of Lachish. This photograph was taken two years after the previous photograph. The Judean city wall has been removed. The earlier wall consisted of a stone foundation (or socle) and a mud brick superstructure. Here most of the mud bricks of the lower, earlier wall have been completely removed, but a section of mud brick is still visible in top center. The square flat area is the stone foundation of the earlier wall. The remains of a still earlier Canaanite building (Level VI) are visible under the lower wall, on the upper left. This Canaanite building was destroyed by fire, probably during the Israelite conquest.
