Sherd washing is a regular activity after the day’s digging ends. By soaking sherds to remove caked soil and by careful observation of cleaned surfaces, inscriptions and decorations are occasionally revealed. The inscription discussed in this article, whose meaning is here disputed by Yohanan Aharoni and Yigael Yadin, was discovered by an archaeology student while washing sherds which he had collected from the ground surface at the Arad citadel.
