Hazor—After completing excavation of the water shaft and tunnel, the archaeologists constructed heavy wooden scaffolds to prevent rocks from falling on visitors. Because they were often immersed in spring water, the steps at the end of the sloping stepped tunnel were made of hard basalt rather than of the softer and faster weathering limestone. These steps are visible in the foreground.
