Gibeon—The stepped tunnel, with its 93 steps cut from solid rock, leads underground from a spring chamber at the base of the hill up to the city; it passes beneath the city wall, then opens within the city. Worn stone treads and polished walls are vivid evidence of the nameless carriers of Gibeon who climbed the steps and touched the walls for support as they carried water up into the city.
