The Dura-Europos baptistry: the west and north walls. On the back of the west wall is an arcosolium (a niche in an archway) decorated with Biblical themes. ln this niche baptisms were performed. The arch spanning the niche is sparsely adorned with fruits and foliage.
On the bottom half of the north wall is a painting of the white sarcophagus of Jesus, decorated with many-pointed stars, and to its right, “three Marys” (John 19:25), two of whom are visible. Each woman cames a torch in her right hand, and holds at her waist a bowl of incense or ointment. In the upper panel Jesus walks on the Sea of Galilee watched from a boat by amazed Apostles.
