Salt sculptures protrude from the shallow water at the southern end of the Dead Sea. The theory that Sodom and Gomorrah lie below these waters has now been disproved. Since the water level of the Dead Sea dropped in recent years due to drainage of the Jordan River, archaeologists were able to examine the exposed seafloor. They concluded that the southern end of the Sea hid no ancient remains and would have been an impossible location for a city. These peculiar formations are not visible at the deeper northern end of the sea.
