Physical anthropologist Donald Ortner (foreground) and Sami Rabadi, the representative of the Jordanian Department of Antiquities, examine bones and funerary offerings found in a burial chamber of a shaft tomb. Four skulls were placed in a neat row. Some of the long bones piled in the center of the chamber indicate that some of the ancient inhabitants were as tall as 6 feet 4 inches.
