Walls of the royal storehouses are part of the Iron Age II city from the time of the Israelite monarchy. To reach earlier levels the archaeologists dug between these walls so as not to destroy the upper levels. Beneath the storehouses they found deep pits which were used as granaries and shallower pits which were used as dwellings. These pits were in use in earlier levels of Iron Age I (Stratum IX and Stratum VIII) and may be glimpsed here between the storehouse walls.
