Petrie’s reputation as an Egyptologist began with his work at Gizeh, site of three 4th dynasty pyramids. In this early twentieth century photograph, the pyramid of Khufu, known as the Great Pyramid, is on the right. The village in the foreground nestled among the palm trees was built over an ancient temple and a causeway from the Nile to the site of the pyramids. This causeway was used to transport the large ashlars brought down the Nile to construct the pyramids.
