ON THE COVER: The Siq, a twisting mile-long defile, guides visitors on foot or mule-back into the rose-colored Nabataean city of Petra in the Jordanian desert. The narrow, hour-glass-shaped opening at the end of the Siq frames the travelers’ first glimpse of the exquisite Treasury, carved from the red sandstone cliffs. (See “New Light on the Nabataeans.”)
