A casemate wall surrounded by the upper fortress of the tell at Kadesh-Barnea. Its double wall was divided into rooms, between 15 and 30 feet long, by cross-walls placed at uneven intervals. In the picture, a man stands at the end of one of these rooms, located along the northern edge of the tell. The rooms were used for living or storage. To the right of the wall is the interior of the fortress which excavations showed to be densely filled with rooms built around a central courtyard.
