The Southern Wall of the Temple Mount, intersected by a 16th century Turkish section of the Old City’s outer wall, overlooks excavations conducted by Professor Benjamin Mazar which revealed substantial remains from five major archaeological periods. An archaeological park has almost been completed which will lead visitors through and around the Ommayad, Byzantine, Herodian, Hasmonean and First Temple remains on the hillside at the foot of the Temple Mount. The monumental Herodian stairway leading to the Temple Mount is visible in the angle between the Turkish city wall and the southern wall. One arch of the sealed Triple Gate can be seen on the right edge of the picture. Above the wall rises the silver dome of El-Aksa mosque.
