This excavation square is deep and the balk high. Using a trowel a volunteer trims the balk face. A winch lying on the ground is used to lift earth and rocks to the surface. After the balk is trimmed, all of its details—strata, inclusions, soil changes—are drawn to scale to preserve a permanent record.
