ON THE COVER: Ancient musical instruments—a theme of this issue—decorated the wall of a third-century B.C. burial cave, at Mareshah in the Shephelah region of south central Israel. Although the delicate fresco faded rapidly after its discovery at the turn of the century, this lovely harp and flute player were preserved in a drawing made immediately after the tomb’s discovery.
