A stone altar to Mithra seen in the foreground, was set in place in the third century A.D. Stone benches were constructed along the walls of the Herodian storage vault. On the bench along the narrow end of the vault, a short post (top center) probably once held the beautiful Mithraic medallion found on the floor nearby. A round depression, the exact diameter of the medallion, was found in the post’s upper surface, evidence that the medallion was once attached there.
