A large stone anchor, c. 1,200 B.C., was salvaged from the bay south of Caesarea’s harbor. It may be the oldest artifact found in any Caesarea excavation and indicates that ships plied this route in the earliest days of the Iron Age, more than a thousand years before Herod built his grandiose city.
