The Dome of the Tablets in the northwest corner of the Temple Mount covers a small area of flat bedrock. The rest of the Dome of the Rock platform is paved with flagstones. Perhaps this ancient Arabic name preserves the memory of the Foundation Stone in the Temple where the Tablets of the Law were kept. Another Arabic name for this cupola, Dome of the Spirits, also suggests the holiness of the site. The flat stone is only one meter lower than the rock mass in the center of the Dome of the Rock.
