Gudea of Lagash. Wearing a wool cap and a shawl-like garment draped over his shoulder, Gudea stands in a traditional pose of worship. Carved from a gray-green, semi-translucent stone called paragonite, this magnificently expressive statue is 16 1/8 inches tall. On Gudea’s bare right shoulder cuneiform characters describe his good works.
