The first glimpse of the gleaming gold coins (in the lower right corner of the photo). Minutes after the coins were discovered, this photo of the courtyard was taken. In the background are paving stones like those that once covered the gold hoard. The stones in the dirt area in the center of the picture to the left of the coins extend down into a lower stratum of the courtyard; they were removed when the excavators penetrated to the lower level.
