A bronze chisel from Ai, used to shape pillars for houses and to cut cisterns in the rock. These hilltop villages were far from natural springs. When each house was built, the Israelite pioneers also cut a cistern out of the rock under and next to the house to collect rainwater from the roof and from the courtyard. Apparently these settlers had brought with them an advanced knowledge of cistern building.
