Bronze weapon and tool hoard. Schaeffer examines a cache of 74 well-preserved swords, flat axes, drills and other 3,000-year-old objects found near the tablets discovered in Ugarit’s palace library. Five axe heads bore inscriptions in alphabetic cuneiform. No two objects in the hoard were alike. At left is Schaeffer’s assistant and friend Georges Chenet.
