Reeds and strands of cord from a thatched house roof at Maa long ago decayed, but their impressions were baked into the roof’s mud when fire devastated the settlement at the end of the 13th century B.C. Excavators found lumps of clay from the roofs, like this one, mixed with a thick ash layer that covered the site.
