City gate of ancient Lachish. Most of the Lachish letters, 21 ostraca inscribed with messages from one Judean military commander to another, were found on the floor of a guardroom in this gate. They were buried by destruction debris when the Babylonians attacked this fortified gate and took the city in about 588 B.C.
