Upper Aqueduct. In the second century A.D. the Tenth Roman Legion constructed an aqueduct to bring water from Solomon’s Pools to the Roman camp near Jerusalem’s Jaffa Gate. Stone pipe sections of this aqueduct, called the Upper Aqueduct to distinguish it from the Low Level Aqueduct built earlier by the Hasmoneans, originally covered over a mile of the journey to Jerusalem; they survive only in a few segments like the one pictured, near Rachel’s tomb.
