Frescoes and columns of Herod’s magnificent palace-fortress at Masada, excavated by Yigael Yadin from 1963–65. The Masada expedition attracted unprecedented popular interest from all over the world. Yadin invited amateurs to join the dig, and thousands of volunteers from 28 countries eagerly asked to take part. Since 1965, the popularity of the site itself, along with exhibits, lectures, Yadin’s book Masada, and a television miniseries, all continue to evidence the unique fascination with Masada, a universal symbol of courage and freedom.
