Cuneiform (“wedge-shaped”) writing in the Sumerian language on this clay tablet describes various treatments for illness. Written by a Sumerian doctor in the third millennium B.C., this is the world’s oldest known medical text. The tablet measures 3 3/4 inches by 6 inches and was discovered in the ruins of the city of Nippur.
