The entire dome interior as well as the sacred rock within Jerusalem’s Dome of the Rock can be seen simultaneously through a photographic fish-eye lens. Columns of richly veined marble surmounted by magnificent column capitals support a series of arches with prominent light and dark bands. Above the arches rests a drum decorated with Byzantine mosaics on a gold field. Sixteen arched stained-glass windows pierce the upper part of the drum. The dome itself, a highly ornate cupola of woodwork and painted and gilded stucco, crowns the drum.
