Thousands of bronze artifacts spill from the amphora in which they were discovered. This single ancient wine jar, uncovered in the wreck of a second-century B.C. Hellenistic cargo ship contained more than 200 pounds of nails and tacks, pieces of metal ingots, handles, weights, architectural fittings, and assorted odds and ends and metal scraps. The cache was probably destined to be resmelted and recast in other forms.
