Mt. Ebal, right, and Mt. Gerizim, left. Buildings of modern Nablus, near the site of ancient Shechem, cluster at the base of the famous Biblical mountains of the curses (Ebal) and the blessings (Gerizim) (Deuteronomy 11:29). At a site on Ebal, Adam Zertal and a team of volunteers recently excavated a square stone structure that Zertal contends is an Israelite altar—perhaps the altar built by Joshua (Joshua 8:30–35).
