Buildings of modern Nablus, near the site of ancient Shechem, cluster at the base of the famous Biblical mountains of the curses (Ebal) and the blessings (Gerizim) (Deuteronomy 11:29). At a site on Ebal, Adam Zertal and a team of volunteers recently excavated a square stone structure that Zertal contends is an Israelite altar—perhaps the altar built by Joshua (Joshua 8:30–35).
