Dominican priests buried in the underground chapel of St. Étienne’s Church include many of the great figures in the history of scientific research in the Holy Land: Louis-Hugues Vincent, who excavated the ancient burial caves next to this chapel in the late 19th century, Roland de Vaux, excavator of Qumran and Tirzah (Tell el-Farah), Raphael Savignac, known for his studies in Arabia and the Negev, and Felix M. Abel, the founder of modern geographical study of the Holy Land.
