St. Étienne’s Church is located north of Jerusalem’s Old City, just a hundred yards away from the Garden Tomb, a site that some believe to be the burial place of Jesus. In the portico surrounding St. Étienne’s courtyard, steps lead down to a tomb where a Byzantine monk is buried.
The stone slab that originally covered this tomb entrance now leans against a nearby wall, right, where its short, Greek inscription can easily be read (see drawing).
