One piece of evidence for dating the courtyard to after the time of Jesus is the Struthion Pool beneath the pavement. According to Josephus, the first-century A.D. Jewish historian, the pool—a double reservoir—was still open to the air as late as 70 A.D., during the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman general Titus. Therefore, there would have been no pavement here at the time of Jesus.
