Broken columns lie in a trench about two feet below the 12th-century Crusader pavement of the present church. Father Corbo suggests that these neatly packed sections—found below the northern side aisle of the Crusader basilica—were part of the fourth-century open-air portico built by Constantine surrounding the courtyard of the Holy Garden.
