Lion-headed eagle (c. 2500 B.C.) is one of the most beautiful but least understood relics from the Treasure of Ur. This carefully rendered figure, with a lapis lazuli body and a gold covered bitumen head and tail, may have been a pendant. The bitumen-filled eye sockets probably held semiprecious stone inlays.
