Time dissolves as the sun rises on a pastoral scene old as the Bible itself—a young shepherdess steering her flock to pasture. Here in a typical wadi of the Negev highlands, until quite recently nomadic Bedouin pitched their tents around central spaces where their fiocks could be gathered at night (see photograph).
